How to Switch Talk Plans and Mobile providers - Getting the best deal

Its now easier than ever to swicth your current talkplan however it does differ freatly depending on your current situation and how long you have held your contract for. For more advice click on one of the below links.

Less than 12 Months

Unfortunately you can't change network or cancel your contract without incurring a large penalty which is usually the remaining contract time. However you will in most circumstances be able to change your talkplan to the lowest possible rate if this is what you require.

Networks such as orange will allow you to do this monthly, whilst others quarterly. Check with your network provider. You may also lose any rollover minutes you have accumulated if applicable.

More Than 12 Months

You are free to take out a new contract, with a new network or with your current one. To do so. You will need to give one months written notice to your current network. So if you do wish to cancel write to them (or ring in some circumstances) on your eleventh month. You will receive a final payment date.

If you are staying with your current provider you will need to upgrade to 'keep' your number, this often means far less competitive deals and often a less impressive handet for the cash. You can try to haggle with customer retentions, but its often better to say goodbye to your old number and get a new contract.

If however you do decide to leave for another network you can 'port' your number across. Ask your current provider for a Porting Authorisation Code (PAC) and give this to your new provider. This usually takes 7 days but its dependent on network and of course their efficiency.

Finally it may be wortwhile asking your 'old' network for a pay as you go (PAYG) sim card for your old phone. Many will provide these free of charge and enables your probably antique phone to be useful again as an emergency phone for the glovebox.
